HER PHILOSOPHY
“Japan gives itself away in the margins. The temple at opening, the local line nobody recommends, the hour before a station fills — those are the parts you will still be describing years later.”

THE STORY
The best view is often between two stations.
Kenji grew up in Kyoto, in a house fifteen minutes from a station he used more than the front door. He left for Tokyo at nineteen and worked four unremarkable years in logistics before taking the year that decided everything: twelve months, one rail pass, and all forty-seven prefectures, travelling with a notebook and not much else.
He came back convinced that Japan is misunderstood by itineraries that treat it as a list of cities, and joined Axplorers in 2020 to argue the case professionally. His first act was to refuse a two-week brief covering five regions. His second was to rewrite it as two regions and send it back, and the client has travelled with the studio three times since.
He now builds every Japan and Korea route the studio sells, planning around season and light rather than landmarks. He still keeps the notebook from that year and still checks it before planning anything in a month he has not travelled recently. When a colleague asks which line to take, he answers with which side of the carriage to sit on.
